The Shadow of the Wind starts off with Daniel’s father
taking him as a boy in 1945 down the streets of Barcelona to The Cemetery of
Forgotten Books. It is a secret, giant maze of book shelves where all lost
books are kept. A few being books by Julian Carax, ones that were not burned,
one very important one called The Shadow of the Wind. This will be Daniel’s
choice of the one book he can take. This author will now open up many mysteries
in Daniel’s life to find out who this man really was and what had happened to
him.
Julian Carax was a mysterious man, he had left for Paris one year and was thought to be killed and never returned but there was no proof, no tales….nothing. Daniel now sends himself on a mission to find out more about this man, his journey takes him too many fellows as he will meet through his life.
His life had ups and downs as he grew older, he was once in love with an older blind girl by the name of Clara Barcelo. The daughter to a book collector Mr. Barcelo who hassles Daniel to give him The Shadow of the Wind for a decent amount of money because it is believed to be the last one left that was not burned but Daniel declines instead he secretly gives the book to Clara as a way to remember. Clara brought happiness to his life in the younger days, and as they both started to grow up they started to drift as Clara found interest in people more so her age. Daniel now a bit older walking around the port saddened at the fact that Clara and he never see each other, during this same time at the port Daniel is approached by a faceless man called Lain Coubert, he knows Daniel has The Shadow of the Wind and he wants it…to burn it, knowing Daniel will not give it to him he threatens him that he really will never see Clara again. Daniel knew he had to warn Clara since she had the book, he raced into her house to take the book off her shelf and look for her but she was preoccupied with another guy, Daniel was beat up by that guy and kicked to the street.
This was the first time he had met a beggar who helped him after his beating named Fermin. That same night Daniel returns The Shadow of the Wind to the shelves of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. Daniel and his father later on come back to offer Fermin a room, food, and a job at the bookstore Daniel’s father owns. After months of knowing Fermin now Daniel decides to introduce him to this Carax mystery and how he has possession of one of his only books left and how no one knows what happened to him.
Daniel and Fermin now work together asking anyone who might have known anything about Carax and piecing all those stories together. Daniel visits a janitor at the Fortuny Hat Shop who tells him how Mr. Fourtuny was believed to be Carax’s father but instead his wife was sleeping with another man but never known who. Daniel sneaks in to the Fortuny apartment to look in a room where Carax was staying to find an old letter on his desk which he steals. The letter later reveals a girlfriend of Carax named Penelope Aldaya, it never reached Carax and it said how she would not be able to escape to Paris with him. Daniel also visits a girl by the name of Nuria who tells him about Penelope and Carax’s life. Daniel later visits a Mr.Molins who tells him a lot about Mr. Fourtuny’s life. Daniel and Fermin take a trip to San Gabriel School which Carax once attended and lied their way into making Father Fernando tell them more about Carax. Another trip Daniel and Fermin take is to Santa Maria del Mar where a lady by the name of Jacinta used to be a house keeper at the Aldaya’s mansion which Penelope lived, they wanted to ask her more about Penelope’s life and her relation to Carax. Daniel is later forced back into the Barcelo residents for a circumstance involving Fermin because he wanted to be seen by Bernarda after he had been beaten again by Inspector Furmero who he and him share a violent history with, once in there Fermin and Daniel introduce Barcelo to this Carax mystery. Nuria was later found a liar about her Carax story than later found murdered. In a manuscript Nuria left for Daniel it told the whole truth about Carax, how she was deeply involved in his life, everything to know about Penelope and how she died giving birth and how they were put in coffins and locked in the basement of the Aldaya’s mansion, how Inspector Furmero has been after Carax all his life since being ordered by Penelope’s Dad to kill him, and how Carax came back from Paris to find out about all that and how he himself was the one burning all his novels and how after being caught in a fire Nuria had taken him and aided him and they lived together.
Lain Coubert is really Julian Carax. The first of two times Daniel encounters (Coubert) Carax at end of the novel when Daniel is in the Aldaya’s mansion and so is Carax hiding from Inspector Furmero they are both found in their along with Bea, shots are fired when Furmero shows up but Daniel jumps in front to save Carax.
