Daniel Sempere:
Daniel Sempere is the main character in the novel and is told from his point of view (not including Julian Carax because his significance is back story) He starts of as a boy and grows up as the novel goes on developing many character traits. The significance of him in this novel is based on the fact that he is the one who picked up The Shadow of the Wind from the Cemetery of Forgotten books and exposed himself to the mystery of Julian Carax, he asks around to many people if they had known anything about Carax and introduces others into his mystery. Daniel admired Carax a lot so much at the end of the novel takes a bullet for him which he survived, although before he knew who he really was he was Daniel's convlict character in the novel. Character traits Daniel shows through this novel are:
Curiosity - To take on a mystery like this one he had to be curious in the first place, as the novel unfolds he becomes for and more curious talking to more and more people, looking and exploring more and more things to show is curiosity.
Lying - As Daniel becomes older he carries a not so good trait of lying, Daniel would lie about many things when asking about Carax just so he'd be sure the people would tell him everything, such as Father Fernando when Daniel (and Fermin) lie saying Carax may be Daniel's long lost relative. Daniel hates himself for it but also tells many lies to his Dad whenever he had asked him where he'd been so late, Daniel did not want to tell his dad the truth and lies to many other of his close friends through the novel.
Perseverance - Through the whole novel Daniel shows perseverance and not giving up on the Carax mystery even when everything seems impossible. Especially at the end of the novel twice, the first when Nuria is found murdered, Daniel feels lost, and confused by this but also the fact that she was the most important person to this Carax mystery and now she was dead, until he kept on the mystery followed Nuria's tracks and got the manuscript she had wrote for him explaining it all. The second time when Daniel had been beaten harshly by Bea's brother for getting her pregnant and while that is unfolding Daniel doesn't have a clue what to do anymore because the manuscript everything except where Carax could be found. Daniel again perseveres even when he is not fully rested and healed and runs to the Aldaya's mansion to where he believes he is.
Julian Carax/Lain Coubert
Julian Carax is a tough one because Lain Coubert is an evil mirror of himself. Daniel tries to solve the Carax mystery and as the novel goes on we find out more and more backstory about Carax's life but at the same time Daniel has in countered a man named Lain Coubert in the actually story not backstory who we later find out is Julian Carax. Julian Carax's significance to the story was he is the author of this book Daniel has found, but no one has ever heard about him for years because he was said to disappear to Paris and never return plus all his books were burned. (This is all backstory) Julian Carax did escape to Paris only he wanted to with his love Penelope Aldaya but she never made it. So when Julian returns from Paris and finds out that Penelope is dead his life is crushed. He started to take out his anger and grief on his books by burning them all, this is where he makes the switch to the faceless/burned face man Lain Coubert (the devil in his stories) who Daniel encnounters different times in the novel because he wants that book from him but Daniel wont give it. Traits shown by Carax/Coubert in the backstory and through the novel are:
Hard-Working - Julian Carax devoted himself to his books, he wanted to be an author and wrote many different novels that people really enjoyed, it took lots of time and effort of him sitting up in his room but it paid off.... Till a certain point
Crazy - Julian Carax had basically turned himself crazy into a man called Lain Coubert, he shows his craziness by burning his life away, he burned any book of his he could find and still looks for books of his to burn
Sneaky - Julian Carax was a sneaky guy, first of all he escapes to Paris and than when he comes back he is able to live an unknown life because he had given his friend his passport and papers before his friend basically committed suicide for him. Even as Lain Coubert he can sneak around the dark with no one noticing.
Fermin Romero de Torres
Fermin used to be a part of a criminal gang at the harbour and after he being caught by Inspector Furmero, beaten, tortured, thrown on the streets he helps Daniel one night after he got beat by Clara's new boy and a while later is given food, a home, and work by Daniel and his father. Fermin is introduced to Daniel's Carax mystery and he acts as Daniel's side kick through the novel as they both try to find out about the mysterious man Julian Carax. Traits Fermin expresses through the novel are:
Gratefulness - Fermin is very grateful to Daniel and his father after taking him off the streets and giving him a new start on life. He devotes himself to doing whatever he and his father please and starts calling Daniel master Daniel to show his gratefulness to both of them. Through the novel Fermin respects both of them for what they have given him.
Fearful - He even after experiencing the worst shows fear in this novel, an example to the beginning is when he literally went mad one morning inside the apartment he was staying, he had, had a dream about what torture he had experienced and it all came back to him as if it was happening again. Also through the novel he always shows fear of seeing Inspector Furmero on the streets again and only this time being killed.
Devoted - Fermin devotes himself to make sure he does the best he can in the book shop even extra. He never does a short job or a half job its always completed to the best with his hard-work. He devotes himself also because he knows that is all he has.

Inspector Furmero is a murderous figure of the law. He is Fermin's conflict character through the novel, and Julian Carax's in the backstory. First of all in the backstory to do with Julian Carax, he is told if he sees Carax to kill him, those were Penelope's father's words because Carax had gotten her pregnant before he left for Paris. This was the one person Furmero could not find for years also because Miguel died with Carax's ID on him so Furmero always thought Carax was dead. Than when Furmero finally finds out he is still alive living with Nuria, he murders her first than goes to murder Carax only to be saved by Daniel. Furmero is not just any police he kills who he dislikes, but of course no one knew that except Daniel and Fermin because he would always make it seem as if someone else had convicted the murder. For example Fermin and Furmero share a torturous history and since Furmero never got to kill him he frames him for everything. Furmero is a tough looking figure and took time and effort to reach the lead police position, but a vicious one at the same time. Traits:
Fierce - He is not a nice kind of guy, he will murder you if he knows you've done something. He shows how he is fierce through the story by whenever he sees Fermin he will grab him and beat him till he bleeds before he lets him go with a warning. He would always portrays a fierce character to Fermin and others.
Murderous - He obviously portrays this character trait in the story because he murders. He does not just arrest you, I guess they took a different approach then than they do now, he murders you. Except he is looked upon others as greatness because he frames others for his murders so no one knows.
Framer - He shows this character trait because when he would murder someone, no one would know because he framed others. His most favourable to frame was Fermin to make his life more miserable than he already has and Furmero uses that as an excuse to take Fermin into custody and beat him bloody once again.

Nuria was a big aspect to the Carax mystery and apparently a very good looking women but the her and Carax lived out of a very small run down house and barely made a living. The first time she talks to Daniel and tells him what she knows about Carax she is holding out on a lot of information. She says she "hardly" knew Carax and didn't see him often, which we obviously find out was a bunch of lies in her manuscript. Nuria knew Carax very well and was obsessed with him. She has known where he'd been and what had happened to him. After he was caught in his own fire she took him under the record of her husband and aided to him, gave him a place to live. No one knew thee Julian Carax was really living with her until she was murdered by Inspector Furmero who found out after years of not knowing. Traits Nuria expressed through the novel were:
Lying - Just as Daniel and Fermin, Nuria has a untrustworthy tongue of her own, keeping big, important secrets away from those who want to know, as we already know, the Carax lies told to Daniel and carried on to Fermin.
Lover - Nuria Monfot was in obsession and love with Carax even though he was in love with Penelope, she showed she loved him especially by taking him in, aiding him, and keeping him alive after he was caught in his own fire. But he knew she could not be with him and they shouldn't, Nuria was heart-broken after he said that but she understood and went on to marry Miguel.
Beauty - It was supposed Nuria was a very good looking women for the hard life she lived, trying to support herself and Carax and barely finding work to make a living, Daniel said it was hard to keep his eyes off her and had told Fermin she had a very nice appearance but no intentions to like her in a loving way of any sort.
